Johnson & Bell Shareholder, Susan K. Swing, and Attorney, Kyle J. Farris, received a directed verdict in favor of their hospital client in a jury trial occurring in Hammond, IN. In this case, plaintiff claimed she tripped over floor mats and fractured her knee as she entered the hospital. During opening statements, plaintiff’s counsel asked the jury for one million dollars. When plaintiff’s case concluded, Swing and Farris filed and argued a motion for a directed verdict, maintaining that plaintiff failed to produce any evidence the hospital knew of the condition of the floor mats. The court took the motion under advisement and, during lunch recess, prepared a written order granting the defense’s motion and throwing out the plaintiff’s case.
