A New Zealand plaintiff who received compensation under New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Act attempted to seek an additional recovery by suing in Illinois. When that failed, he sued his attorneys for legal malpractice. Johnson & Bell Attorneys, Carlos A. Vera and Adam J. Sedia, successfully defended the attorneys, winning summary judgment in their clients’ favor and then winning affirmance in a published decision of the First District Appellate Court. Not satisfied, the plaintiff sought leave to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court. Vera and Sedia responded in opposition, and on November 28, the Illinois Supreme Court denied the plaintiff’s petition, effectively bringing the litigation against the attorneys to a close.
