Gregory Schiller Discusses Med Mal Litigation Strategies at ABA Event

Johnson & Bell Shareholder, Gregory E. Schiller, served as a panelist at the Physicians Legal Issues Conference, which took place June 7-9, 2018, in Chicago. The conference was sponsored by the American Bar Association Health Law Section and the Chicago Medical Society.

Mr. Schiller discussed the topic, “Anatomy of a Malpractice Lawsuit,” on Saturday, June 9, along with Michael Cogan of Cogan & Power PC. Attorneys on the panel offered real-world perspectives on medical malpractice litigation strategies, including issues regarding malpractice claims, notice requirements, selecting and handling medical expert witnesses, deposition and trial preparation, settlement strategies and jury selection. The presentation also addressed the impact of tort reform on medical malpractice lawsuits.

The conference, which offered CLE and CME credits, brought together legal experts, physicians, government and insurer representatives to target attorneys and physicians who work with health care-related issues, providing insight and strategies that can help improve a legal or medical practice.

Sessions within the conference covered employment contracting and non-compete clauses, managed care contracting, disruption and impairment in the workplace, compliance issues and government enforcement, telemedicine, health care mergers and consolidations, new payment models, data privacy and security, and physician and private equity investments.

Gregory E. Schiller focuses on health care law and has tried numerous medical malpractice cases to verdict throughout the state of Illinois. He's handled matters involving a variety of medical specialties, including anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, trauma surgery, neurology, pediatric neurology, obstetrical nursing and surgical nursing. He has also tried cases to verdict on behalf of long-term care facilities that involve the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.

Mr. Schiller frequently lectures before physicians, nurses, hospitals, risk managers and in-house counsel on medical and legal issues affecting the medical community. He’s also written and collaborated on numerous articles on health care issues and has co-authored a chapter for the “Medical Malpractice Book” published by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
