Samuel D. Branum concentrates his practice on municipal liability. Prior to joining Johnson & Bell, Mr. Branum served as a law clerk to the Honorable Harold A. Baker of the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. During the clerkship, he worked extensively on Section 1983 prisoner litigation cases, drafting over fifty summary judgment orders in cases involving a wide variety of claims. This included First Amendment retaliation, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech; Eighth Amendment excessive force, conditions of confinement, and deliberate indifference to serious medical needs; Fourteenth Amendment due process and detainee claims; claims under the ADA and RLUIPA; and Monell claims.
Mr. Branum received his B.A. from the University of Florida, and his J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law. While in law school, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Law, Technology & Policy. He also received award of Best Petitioner Brief in the Evan A. Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition.
