It is a sad time at Johnson & Bell.  Long-time Johnson & Bell Shareholder, Daniel C. Murray, passed away on November 27 at the age of 71. Born and raised in Evanston, IL, Mr. Murray earned an undergraduate degree from Marquette University and his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

Mr. Murray began his legal career in 1976, highlighted by his service as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and a Staff Attorney for the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Following a distinguished career in public service, Mr. Murray joined Johnson & Bell in 1991 and retired from the firm in 2013.

“Dan was a good friend,” explained Joseph R. Marconi, President of Johnson & Bell.  “When he joined us from the U S Attorneys’ office, he gave our firm instant credibility in the federal courthouse. Just like everyone else who worked with Dan, all the federal judges knew him and liked him.”

“A talented lawyer, Dan was a great mentor and a valued sounding board for all of our attorneys,” stated William V. Johnson, Chairman of the Johnson & Bell Board of Directors.

“Dan was an expert in Federal Procedure, highly respected by the judiciary in the Northern District and 7th Circuit,” noted John W. Bell, vice chairman of the Johnson & Bell Board of Directors. “I will miss him.”

Upon learning of Dan’s passing, a number of our attorneys shared their thoughts and reflections.

John A. Childers

“A great lawyer, but an even better person.  A witty personality, too.”

Robert M. Burke

“A true gentleman and never too busy to help out a colleague.”

Kevin G. Owens

“A fine person who will be truly missed by his family and his great number of friends.”

Mr. Murray’s family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions to the Marquette University Urban Scholars Scholarship Fund or the Davis Phinney Foundation For Parkinson's would be greatly appreciated.
